Istanbul (not Constantinople)

New Mosque

We all love a good falling-out of former Ottoman Empire nations, don’t we? As such, it only made sense to head to Istanbul immediately after Athens to check the gossip on this side of the Adriatic sea.

Where to begin? Firstly, the city is insanely busy. Upon landing, Google Maps cheerfully informed us that we could take the metro to our destination and that we only had to make one change. Turns out that change was in the largest station in the city centre, and we had to drag our suitcases across a distance that would make some Tube stations blush. It also turns out our Airbnb is right next door to Galata Tower, which attracts tourists by the hundreds. Can’t think of how many selfies we’re in inadvertently.

After a chilled day to unwind, we set out to explore the Old City.

Crossing over Galata bridge, we had an exceptional view of many of the Old City’s mosques, all of which are gorgeous. We strolled through the Spice Bazaar, which, true to its name, sold many a spice alongside your normal bits of tourist tat. Beautiful building, though.

From saffron, to Turkish tea, to ‘love tea’, it has everything the discerning shopper needs in this modern age.

We took in the sights of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Our intentions were to head inside the Blue Mosque as it was the only one you can go in for free – we’re on a budget, after all. But due to our impeccable organisation we turned up at the point midday prayers were underway, so no going inside for us. We’ll be looking to head back there, so watch this space!

We took in the Serpent Column – brought over from Athens by Emperor Constantine – and the Egyptian Obelisk. It’s quite humbling, gazing at something that dates back to circa 1400BC. Iris was certainly thankful that it stopped me making jokes about my age. For now, anyway.

So what are our plans now? We’ve yet to explore the Asian side of the city, so that’s on the agenda. And we hope this doesn’t ruin our reputations by saying we’re yet to have an authentic Turkish kebab! Definitely on the cards.
