Croatia – Kings Landing, a Big Mountain, and many a stray cat

So the day was finally here! Huge shout out to my parents, the absolute troopers, for picking us up to take us to the airport at 5:30. It was a huge help for both of us and it was nice to see them before we departed. Thank you!

We arrived in Dubrovnik during the last day of the monsoon season. No, I didn’t know Croatia had a monsoon season either, but how else do you explain a torrential downpour the likes of which you only ever see in films? We struggled with our suitcases from the cruise port, pulled them up a large flight of stairs where the water was cascading down them, and finally made it to our Airbnb.

Once we unpacked, adorning every part of the apartment with clothes needing to dry, we settled down to a quiet dinner and headed to bed, ready to face the day.

Our first accomplishment was completing the Križni Put (The Way of the Cross) walk up Mt Srđ, overlooking the Dubrovnik Old Town. There were fourteen sculptures, each outlining a stage of the crucifixion and resurrection story of Jesus. But I’d have gladly changed places as this walk was steep!

After a spot of lunch we went back down for our first look around the old town. It’s one of the most splendid old towns in Europe, its history palpable. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognise it being the setting of Kings Landing, and its docks and streets were featured in many a scene. Will we be able to inspire the locals to support our true claim to the Iron Throne? Keep an eye on this blog for exclusive updates.

So what’s next? As I write this, I’m left home alone as Iris has gone to try out scuba diving. Those of you who know me will know me and the ocean are best kept separated, whether it’s several miles apart or through the hull of a cruise liner. Instead, I’m off to the Red History Museum, which contains exhibits about Croatia under communism, and then off to meet Iris later. Tomorrow we’ll be heading back to the Old Town for a properly good gander, so more pics to follow!

Matt
